On this day in 1995, a small Seattle-based ecommerce website, Amazon was officially open for business. The company, founded by Jeff Bezos, made $15.7 million in revenues by 1996 and had shipped more than 20 million items by 1999. That small ecommerce website hit a market cap of $350 billion for the first time this month, becoming one of the top five companies in the U.S. in terms of market value.
